MONUMENT in Venice

In 2024, Monument made its international debut in the heart of Venice — the world’s most iconic setting for contemporary art. Hosted at the Giardini della Marinaressa and along the Fondamenta dei Sette Martiri, the exhibition presented large works by leading Australian sculptors, placing their practice on a global stage.

This exhibition marked the beginning of Monument’s journey in Europe, expanding from its origins in Sydney to one of the most historically rich cultural centers in the world. In partnership with the European Cultural Centre and the ‘Open Space’ initiative, the project invited international artists, architects, and designers to engage with sculpture in urban environments — encouraging dialogue, collaboration, and community connection.

The featured works explored the evolving role of public art in a global context — responding to place, identity, and the shifting boundaries of material, scale, and space. At its core, Monument in Venice celebrated sculpture as a powerful, borderless form of expression.

The Venice exhibition opened new pathways for cultural exchange. It served as both a showcase and a bridge: connecting Australian creative innovation with European tradition, and artists with audiences from all over the world.
