MONUMENT in Sydney

Following its international debut at the 2024 Venice Biennale, Monument returns to Sydney with a curated selection of large-scale sculptures first presented at the Giardini della Marinaressa and along the Fondamenta dei Sette Martiri, in partnership with the European Cultural Centre. This marks a significant moment in the project's journey—bringing works that engaged with one of the world's most prestigious cultural events back into the public sphere of its home city.

Now situated within the dynamic environment of Westfield Bondi Junction, these striking sculptures are joined by new additions from the same artists, continuing Monument’s mission to integrate ambitious public art into everyday life. The shopping centre—typically a space of commerce and routine—is reimagined as a cultural platform where contemporary art becomes part of the urban rhythm, encountered in unexpected and accessible ways.

This Sydney iteration builds upon the themes explored in Venice: materiality, space, and the relationship between sculpture and the city. It highlights how site-responsive artworks can transform familiar environments, encouraging new perspectives and inviting moments of reflection amidst the everyday. Monument in Bondi Junction blurs the boundary between gallery and public space, reinforcing the belief that meaningful artistic encounters should not be confined to traditional institutions.

By bridging international and local contexts, this exhibition deepens Monument’s commitment to public engagement, cultural exchange, and artistic innovation. It brings the dialogue started in Venice into the heart of Sydney, connecting global ideas with local audiences—and celebrating sculpture as a vital, living form of expression in the contemporary urban landscape.
